Dr. Polin graduated from Harvard University and the University of Virginia School of medicine. He completed a Neurosurgical residency at the University of Virginia where he trained in general neurosurgery with Dr. John Jane, in pituitary surgery with Dr. Edward Laws, and in gamma knife neurosurgery with Dr. Ladislau Steiner, one of the original designers of the gamma knife. Dr. Polin stayed at the University of Virginia to do a fellowship in neuro-oncology, studying gene therapy as a strategy to arrest the growth of malignant brain tumors. He also studied under Professor Vinko Dolenc, one of the world's greatest neurosurgeons in Ljubianja, Slovenia.

Dr. Polin has authored numerous publications on brain injury, brain tumors, spine trauma, and vascular neurosurgery. He has given numerous peer review and invited presentations at national neurosurgical meetings. He is involved with clinical research investigating the role of inflammation in brain injury, mechanisms of spinal cord injury, and reconstruction of the covering of the brain after complex surgery. He conducts laboratory research on the role of inflammation in brain tissue injury.

Dr. Polin was awarded the Young Investigators Award by the Brain Injury Association for his work on surgical management of victims of brain injury in 1997. He is the only fellowship trained neuro-oncologist in the Shreveport area and is a member of the Society of Neuro-oncology and the Southwest Oncology group as well as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurosurgery. He specializes in the management of brain tumors, including both conventional surgery and gamma knife radiosurgery.
